Sewing Machine Skills Beginners

This two-session workshop is designed for complete beginners who want to gain confidence in using a sewing machine and includes a £5 voucher* which can be redeemed in Torbay Scrapstore towards the purchase of fabric and notions for your cushion cover. Across two evenings of 1.5 hours each, you’ll be guided step-by-step through the fundamentals of machine sewing, with plenty of time for hands-on practice.
What You’ll Learn
• Machine setup: How to thread the machine, wind a bobbin, and adjust tension.
• Choosing the right fabric for your project (using your included £5 Torbay Scrapstore voucher).
• Stitching techniques: Straight stitch, zig-zag, and other basic functions.
• Fabric handling: How to guide fabric smoothly and maintain even seams.
• Troubleshooting: Common issues like skipped stitches, thread jams, or uneven tension.
• How to press fabrics for a professional finish.
• Practical project: Apply your new skills to create your very own cushion cover.
Equipment
• You are welcome to bring your own sewing machine if you’d like to learn on the equipment you’ll use at home.
• If you don’t have one, we will provide a sewing machine for you to use during the workshop.
• All essential materials (thread, fabric for practice, and basic tools) will be supplied.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll be arranging coloured glass pieces of frit and stringers in your own unique patterns on a piece of clear art glass. Once fused and slumped in the kiln, your piece will transform into a unique bowl that’s both functional and decorative — perfect as a serving dish, candle holder, trinket bowl, or striking centrepiece. After about 14 days, your glass will be packaged and sent to you. Ideal for beginners and creative enthusiasts alike!

It is time to look at the finer things in fused glass and you’ll be delighted to know that no prior experience is needed to create these stunning fused glass pieces. We’ll supply all the materials you need to create your one-of-a-kind rectangular pendant on a silver plated chain with matching earrings, and a second rectangular pendant using selected glass inclusions and finished on a silver plated chain. We will then take your designs to be fired in our kiln and return them to Torbay Scrapstore about two weeks later for you to collect.
